WHY BANAT EL SHARQ WAS STARTED...
After watching a performance by the Trisha Dancers from Milwaukee years ago, I was hit with emotions. Here was this big beautiful group of women of all sizes, shapes, ages, and experiences dancing together in harmony. Their happiness was shining right out to the audience, and the audience's happiness with their fun performance bounced right back at them! Ah, the sisterhood of bellydance. I don't often feel this fuzzy way about bellydance, but I think seeing this performance also brought me back to my own beginnings in the bellydance world. After a few months of classes, I started rehearsing and performing with a dance troupe called El Amel that was run by my teacher, Yasmina Ramzy. This troupe had that same nice feel to it. I was 15 years old at the time and found myself bonding with women of all ages and from all walks of life. We performed at nursing homes, fundraisers, and festivals, we got tons of performance experience, learned all sorts of cool styles of Middle Eastern dance, and became a pretty tight posse! I had a great time back then and wanted to create this type of opportunity for dancers now!
